Fall Trends: Flop or Cop
Like it or not, fall is right around the corner. One minute we’re all wearing hot pink dresses inspired by the Barbie Movie at a summer bash, and the next we’re busting out our turtle necks and our blazers…but wait are those still in style? Read below to see my fall trend predictions, and get a fall cheat-sheet on what to buy when shopping for your back to school wardrobe.
2023 Fall Color palette
Having a color palette can save you so much time when trying to make outfit combos early in the morning, and I like to do this seasonally. For example, everyone this summer was wearing Magenta, Olive Green, Creme, and Greek Blue, and of course neutrals, which is always a must for a classy + timeless look. Although, something I enjoyed this summer was how everyone had fun with colors, and patterns. Admit it, we were all getting tired of the yawn-worthy “Beige Mom Aesthetic” and the seeming death of detail.
This fall according to Vogue predictions “Tomato Red” is not just a casual player; this hue strutted its stuff all over the runway during Fall Fashion Week, demanding the spotlight. Imagine owning the room with a confident monochromatic look, entirely covered in the power of red. Or maybe you're the more subtle type who prefers just a tease of red in your "OOTD." Whether you are in Tomato Red head-to-toe, or maybe it’s just a red colored bag or shoes, no matter your style philosophy, consider this a Tomato-Hued invitation to amp up your fall wardrobe game.
Another fun color curve-ball to add to your cart, is “Vintage Chartreuse.” I know, I know usually when you think Fall, you’re imagining the dark, moody colors. But this season, we’re letting Chartreuse waltz in with a flirty wink, flaunting its spring-like brightness. Chartreuse possesses the remarkable ability to harmonize with the rich autumn shades, from the comforting warmth of brown, to khaki, and the earthy charm of sage green.
Take a risk this fall as the leaves change, and add some Chartreuse to your closet. whether it’s a small detail like a scarf, or maybe you go all in and get an oversized knit sweater. Before you think to yourself “Oh I couldn’t pull that off” give it a chance, and add some zest to your style. And of course, what would a fall wardrobe look like without the trusty OG colors such as Burnt Orange, Creme, Brown, Sage Green, & Mustard Yellow.
80’s Business Chic
Now that our fall color scheme has been meticulously curated, let’s talk trends. Navigating trends in this modern internet-fueled pace can sometimes feel like chasing a caffeinated squirrel through a digital forest. But fear not, amidst the chaos, there’s an interesting pattern of history's fashion trends that boomerang back to present time.
A look that is doing just that is the "80's Business Chic" aesthetic – a blast from the past that's returned to strut its confident, shoulder padded silhouette. Imagine high contrast black-and-white skirt sets + dresses, blazers, and velvet - a blend of authority and elegance. Let's not forget the quirky companions of this look. Loafers, Sweater vests, and cargo pants, also known as "grandma chic," now resurfaces with a dash of ironic nostalgia, making the transition from modest and boring to statement pieces.
High-water length hemlines
This is a controversial trend, but lately I’ve been loving the long skirts + high-water length dresses. Our Founding Fashion Queen Emma Chamberlain, has been rocking these for years now, but it seems to be picking up speed with fall around the corner. To combat the Amish feel to this trend, try and play with a shorter crop top’s or even corset tops. These skirts look great with loafers, or interesting belts. No matter what your fashion niche is, there’s a way to work in a longer hemline.
Purposeful color clashing
Sometimes it feels like wearing colors that clash is a CRIME, and for some that’s exactly what it is. For others, this once deemed criminal fashion trend is a catwalk’s avant-garde take. I’ve recently seen an influx of influencers purposely wearing colors that clash together such as Blue + Orange, or Magenta + Green. Immediately I raised my eyebrows, and was skeptical as to why someone would do that on purpose. But as it sat with me and the idea marinated in my mind, I started to enjoy it.
As I mentioned before, slowly in fashion things have started to become more minimalistic and basic. People usually pair a neutral with a neutral, or if they do have fun with color it’s only a pop, like a colorful purse. Now, imagine a fresher formula, a shift where bright meets brighter, where sapphire dances with tangerine and fuchsia is paired with lime. It's as if the color wheel itself was thrown out the window, realizing that opposites do attract. let us not forget that every masterpiece once began as an experiment.
To summarize this fall…
Overall, I’m really excited to see the creativity during the new season. As our inner Basic Pumpkin Spice selves start to thaw from hibernation, remind yourself it’s time to throw our our plaid flannels and skinny jeans. Think of this as a fashion metamorphosis, let’s stretch our wings and embrace new colors, patterns, and textures. Let me know your thoughts on these predictions, what your predictions are, and if you have any interesting predictions for the Winter Season over at the “Contact Me” section.
I had so much fun writing about fashion for a change, although I have a feeling that I’ll feel a little left out this Fall considering that I don’t think Mexico is cooling down at any point. Personally, I’ll be trying the “80’s Business Chic” look this Fall, and adding some Red into my suitcase.
